The London Eye holds first ever EyeTweet!

03 Jul 2009

London, 2 July 2009

The London Eye last night hosted its first event industry TweetUp where 40 industry ‘high flyers’ enjoyed Laurent-Perrier Champagne from the comfort of a Private Capsule 135 meters above London, which was followed by a quick trek across the city in a classic double-decker bus to Ping Pong the stylish Twenty-First Century Tea House in Appold Street (near Liverpool Street Station) where delicious hand-made dim sum and sensational cocktails were served.

The event was dubbed the ‘EyeTweet’ following a recent flurry of tweets on Twitter the micro blogging platform last month when it was discovered there were quite a few industry folk who have either not been on the London Eye before or had not experienced it for a long time. Within 5 minutes a capsule had been filled plus a waiting list of others who were interested – possibly the fastest event ever organised.

Guests were treated to a trial of a new digi-guide that is available to guests for only £4.99. The revolutionary hand held technology knows where you are standing and pin points the landmarks of interest viewable within a 40 km radius of the London Eye’s glass capsules through which you get an uninterrupted 360 degree view. The touch screen technology then allows you to zoom in on the landmarks of interest and hear the history and fun facts of London’s stunning cityscape- cutting edge technology from the UK’s most innovative landmark.

The London Eye has always been reknowned for quality and innovation and the recently announced capsule upgrade programme which will be completed in time for the London 2012 Olympics illustrates Merlin Entertainments commitment to future-proofing London’s most iconic landmark. A number of upgrades will be made to each capsule in addition to a minor visual facelift, for example the existing heating and ventilation system (HVAC) will be upgraded to a more efficient, environmentally friendly one. In addition, one of the upgraded capsules will have increased technological functions, which all other capsules will be built to support in the future. The advanced capsule will include four ceiling mounted screens and enhanced multi-media and wi-fi capabilities enabling the capsule to provide music and on-screen visuals.

The only way is up

The circumference of the wheel is 424m (1.392ft) - meaning that if it were unraveled, it would be 1.75 times longer than the UK's tallest building One Canada Square.
