Champagne Pommery hosts first ever pop up gallery in the sky
19 Oct 2010
To celebrate its second year as the official Champagne sponsor of the internationally renowned Frieze Art Fair, Champagne Pommery has collaborated with the Rebecca Hossack Gallery to create a pop-up exhibition on the London Eye.
The gallery, which was suspended 442 feet above the ground, in one of the London Eye’s capsules, showed specially commissioned works by British artist Kate Jenkins. The artist, who is known for her charming crocheted portrayals of items from the world of food and drink, was the first ever professional artist to have a show on the London Eye.
Naturally, the subject of the installation was an indulgent Champagne and strawberries scene, with each object hand crocheted. Everything from Champagne flutes to cup cakes featured.
Champagne Pommery’s relationship with Frieze started last year, when they became a sponsor of both the fair and the stand prize. Worth £10,000, the prize is awarded annually to the gallery with the most innovative display.
Commenting on the project Kate said: “When Pommery approached me to create an installation for the London Eye, I literally jumped at the chance. It’s got to be one of the most unusual gallery spaces in London and the ideal setting for a surreal Champagne reception like ours.”
Sara Hicks, Vranken-Pommery Monopole UK Manager said: “Art and Champagne has always been an unbeatable combination, and Pommery has been strongly affiliated with the arts for many years - so what could be better than the Champagne literally becoming a work of art? We loved Kate’s quirky style from the start.”
The invitation only exhibition was on show for two thirty minute rotations on Monday 11th October and Tuesday 12th October 2010.
