London is one of the best, if not the best, place to eat, drink and enjoy yourself in the world. But where to start? If you’re not from the capital it can be especially hard to find the coolest places or even know where to start. Here’s our list of some of the greatest bars and restaurants that we recommend you work your way through this year.
1. The Pink Chihuahua, Soho
Great for dates.
Everyone likes Mexican and this one in the heart of Soho not only has a funky name, but also has a cocktail bar with guest DJs and tequila and mezcal tastings.
2. Flat Iron, Soho, Covent Garden, Shoreditch and Westbourne Park
Meat-eaters.
This straightforward, no reservations restaurant serves up great quality, great value steaks - no messing around. They also do butchery demos on the odd day.
3. Club Mexicana at The Spread Eagle Pub, Homerton
Vegan.
One of London’s best vegan eateries has now got their hands on a pub - London’s first vegan pub has just opened complete with beer, quiz nights, live music and delicious jackfruit tacos.
4. Tredwell, Covent Garden/Leicester Square
A seven-course tasting menu… for kids!
If you’re tired of kids menus only offering up fish fingers, sausages and pasta then treat your adventurous youngsters to Marcus Wareing’s culinary extravaganza. What’s more you’ll get all the recipes to take home with you.
5. Wahaca, Southbank
Take the whole family.
Forward thinking in everything they do - food, service and sustainability. They’ve got vegan and allergen menus and are super-kid friendly. Their Southbank branch is built from eight recycled shipping containers. What’s not to like?
6. The Ledbury, Notting Hill
A VERY special treat.
Brett Graham’s restaurant has been voted the best restaurant in the UK, 27th best in the world and has two Michelin stars. Need we say more?
7. Jidori, Covent Garden
Be the first.
Opening soon in Covent Garden after its success in Dalston, this Japanese yakitori restaurant is dedicated to the art of the grilled chicken skewer. They’re even more delicious when washed down with one of the Japanese craft beers, cocktails or sake.
8. Mr Fogg’s, Mayfair and Covent Garden
Cocktail heaven.
You are invited to the residence of eccentric British adventurer, Phileas J. Fogg, Esq. Enter his Victorian tavern and gin parlour to try his 80 cocktails, inspired by his round the world travels (of course!)
9. Wright Brothers, Kingly Street
When you seafood, eat it.
There’s a few Wright Brothers across London now, this one is tucked behind Carnaby Street (tip - always go one or two roads away from the main shopping streets to find the nicest restaurants). It’s one of the best places in London to go for a seafood platter or a plate of oysters, washed down with a glass of fizz or a pint of Guinness.
10. Tapas Brindisa, Borough Market
For sharers.
Get here early to avoid the queues, but if you don’t manage to enjoy it as part of the experience. Grab a drink at the bar and salivate over the food coming out until it’s your turn.
11. Franco Manca, Brixton
Best pizza.
They’re popping up all over London and the country now but the Brixton branch is the original and the best. The hustle and bustle of Brixton Village will keep children and adults entertained. Afterwards explore the market for some shopping and delicious cakes from the bakeries.
12. Darcy and May Green, Paddington
Bottomless brunch on a barge.
This floating bar and restaurant on a boat in Little Venice is open from morning to night for coffee and cocktails, bottomless brunches, healthy lunches, divine dinners and a buzzing bar.
13. Snaps and Rye, Notting Hill
Scandi sandwiches and Nordic cuisine.
A modern Danish restaurant offering breakfast, brunch and lunch everyday (except Mondays) and dinner Thursday to Saturday. Well behaved dogs are welcome too.
14. Noble Rot, nearest tube Russell Square
Wine connoisseurs.
One of the best informal and unpretentious spots for fine wine and good food in the capital.
15. Champagne + Fromage, Covent Garden and three other locations
Say “Cheeeese!”
A great place for a pre-theatre tipple accompanied by some cheesy nibbles. They also do French afternoon teas with Champagne, cheeses and macarons.
16. Holborn Dining Room, Holborn
Best of British.
A big brasserie with a vibrant atmosphere whether you turn up for breakfast, lunch or dinner. The food is brilliant and classic British - think scotch eggs, fish and chips, apple crumble. There’s a gin bar too and a pie room coming soon!
17. Bleecker, Spitalfields, Victoria and Bloomberg
Burger and chips.
A few years ago burgers got good… addictively good in London, and Bleecker was one of the main culprits to blame for that. There’s only a few outdoor tables at their Spitalfields, Victoria and Bloomberg branches, so don’t expect cosy comfort, but you still won’t be disappointed.
18. Turtle Bay, Brixton
Great jerk!
There’s rum, there’s reggae and there’s jerk - what more do you want from a Caribbean restaurant? They have a menu for little turtles too.
19. Nine Lives, Borough
Zero waste.
Bermondsey Street is always a safe bet for bars and restaurants and Nine Lives is no exception. Except that they’re fairly exceptional with their zero waste policy. They also have a penchant for parties and cocktails.
20. Roka, Fitzrovia
This is how we roll.
Roka is an award-winning Japanese restaurant and it’s easy to see why. Make sure you try the sushi… and the dumplings… and the ribs… and the bar downstairs!
