What you should be doing in London Monday 8th - Sunday 14th May 2017.

A different new restaurant for every night after work this week...

Bun House, Soho

There are pig buns, veg buns and red choc buns all at £2.50 at this new Hong Kong street food inspired take-away.

The Strangers’ Dining Room, Westminster - this dining room in the House of Commons has permanently opened to the public for two sittings a week. A three-course meal with coffee is £75.

The Cheese Bar, Camden Market

The guys behind The Cheese Truck bring you The Cheese Bar, with dishes made from over 30 British cheeses and over 20 craft beers on the menu.

Hot Pot, Soho

A big restaurant with lots of large tables for you and all your mates to come and create your own hot pots. Choose the ingredients you want for your broth and sizzle away at your table.

Curveball, Balham

Ball shape food, cocktails and coffee at this brand new Balham eatery.

It’s Eurovision!

When? The semi-finals are on 9th and 11th May with the grand final on 13th, all at 8pm.

Where? The 62nd Eurovision is going to be held in Kiev, Ukraine for the second time, after their win in Stockholm last year with Jamala performing the the song 1944.

Who? Portugal and Romania return after missing 2016, Bosnia and Herzegovina have pulled out for financial reasons and Russia have too after their performer was banned from entering the Ukraine. And yes, Australia are in it.

What about the UK? We are one of the “Big Five” countries with a guaranteed place in the final, although this is unlikely to help our chances of winning which hasn’t happened since Katrina and the Waves in 1997. Our hopes lie with 2009 X Factor contestant, Lucie Jones singing ‘I Will Never Give Up On You.’

London’s best kept secret that we’ve discovered this week - how to escape the city without leaving.

Summer in the city won’t feel like you’re in the city if you hop on the tube/train to these exotic and adventurous locations, all within zones 1-6.

  • Wat Buddhapadipa (Thai Buddhist Temple), Wimbledon Park
  • Highgate Cemetery, Archway
  • Kyoto Garden, High Street Kensington
  • Hainault Forest Country Park and Redbridge Cycling Centre, Hainault
  • London Wetland Centre, Barnes

How the locals do it...

Who: Christopher, 32.

Lives: Brixton.

Works: 100 Shapes (design studio), Camden.

How do you spend your commute: I'm out of the house by 7:15am. I'm either:

* Panic-reading my latest book from book club.
* Listening to one of my many design related podcasts that I've subscribed to over the years (Design Matters, Design Details, Design of Business, etc.)
* Listening to the same Spotify playlist I've been listening to since early 2016 (because change is hard). I've just bought a pair of Bose noise cancelling headphones which have transformed the Victoria line wind-tunnel into an oasis of calm.

Coffee: I like coffee, but my palette is unrefined so I mainly drink from flat whites Pret (because they're small)  or free coffee from my office machine.

After work drinks: This changes all the time because there are too many options in London, but one of my favourite places is the balcony off the second floor of the National Theatre. It’s often empty so you can buy a bottle from the theatre bar and sit in relative isolation overlooking the Thames and get all philosophical with friends.

A seriously special dinner: Negril's on Brixton Hill. It's not pricey at all, but their Negril 'platter for two' is my favourite treat - especially when it's just for one. Their salt fish fritters with gravy!

Let your hair down: This hasn’t happened yet, so I can’t guarantee my hair will be let down but I’m super excited. The Mighty Hoopla Festival is happening on the 4th June and is aimed at anyone who came of age in the late 90s. It’s showcasing a guilty pleasure smorgasbord including All Saints, Charlotte Church, Snap! and S Club Party (née S Club 7). No pop-shamers need attend.
