Thursday 25th January is Burns Night - a celebration of the life and poetry of 17th century Scottish poet Robert Burns. It’s a great excuse to get out your bagpipes, put on your kilt, grab a haggis and ceilidh on down.

BURNS SUPPER

Burns Night is normally celebrated with a supper, the first of which was held by his friends on the fifth anniversary of Burns’ death in 1801, and has been going ever since. Traditionally a formal Burns supper will have the following parts:

  • Piping in the guests
  • The hosts welcome speech and grace
  • A Scottish soup course
  • The piping in of the haggis
  • The Address to a Haggis
  • A whisky toast to the haggis
  • Eating of the haggis with neeps and tatties (swede and mashed potatoes)
  • Dessert course(s)
  • Toasts
  • Readings and singing of Burns’ work
  • Closing and singing of Auld Lang Syne
WHERE TO CELEBRATE BURNS NIGHT IN LONDON
Mac & Wild

The brilliant Scottish restaurants Mac and Wild are not celebrating Burns Night… they’re celebrating Burns Week this whole week! They are hosting various events including whisky and beer pairings and haggis-making masterclasses. For the week they’re also adding to the menu a special whisky flight, Burns cocktail and the Mac & Wild Haggis, Neeps and Tatties Burger for only £10. Mac & Wild have restaurants in Fitzrovia and Devonshire Square.

Ceilidh Club

A ceilidh is sort of the Scottish equivalent of karaoke - in the beginning no one wants to get involved - and then you can’t drag people away! The Ceilidh Club are hosting two Burns Night events this week on Friday and Saturday in Hammersmith Town Hall, and an extra one on Friday at Cecil Sharp House. It starts at 8pm for three hours with a live band and a caller to guide you through the steps.

Burns Night at Fortnum and Mason

The department store are hosting a decadent four-course Burns Night supper in their Gallery Restaurant which will include Caledonian cheeses, Scottish smoked salmon, fine wines and of course, bagpipers, haggis and whisky.

The Burns Club of London

Founded in 1868, The Burns Club of London is surely the obvious choice for Burns Night. The club celebrates all aspects of Scottish culture, supports Scottish charities and, of course, celebrates the life and works of Robert Burns. It’s £20 a year to become a member and meet ups normally take place at The Caledonian Club.

Burns Night at The Sun Tavern

Burns Night Bethnal Green style with £6 whisky cocktails, free haggis scotch eggs and a DJ set from Rennie from famous Scottish indie rock band The View.
